Abbey Wood: old oaks, older ruins, good coffee

Eighty-eight acres of ancient woodland with a ruined abbey in the middle of it, and a café at the gate that keeps a jar of hazelnuts behind the counter.

  • Eighty-eight acres of oak and hornbeam — your squirrel gets to meet the locals
  • Coffee stop at the Lodge before we set off: flat white, filter or a decent decaf
  • Lesnes Abbey ruins, standing since 1178, harness back on for the photo

Seven Sisters: the towpath & the coffee barge

Flat, shady and almost entirely traffic-free — the easiest walk we run, and the one with a narrowboat serving espresso halfway along.

Hyde Park: 350 acres and a lake to circle

The big one. Enormous open grass, ancient oaks the whole way round the Serpentine, and a coffee kiosk you can see clear across the water.
